The Minister of Youth and Sport, Solomon Dalung, says his ministry is working assiduously to improve the standards of the National Youth Games.
The minister who made this known at the closing ceremony of the third edition of the Youth Games in Ilorin, urged all athletes and coaches who participated at the Games to build on their performances at the competition and become worthy champions in future.
Delta State who won last year's edition, came first again, winning the Games with 21 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze medals.
Ogun State that came second last year, finished 5th this year, with 7 gold, 6 silver and 14 bronze medals, host Kwara also dropped from 3rd to 4th position, ending up with 10 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals.
Akwa Ibom State replaced Ogun State in the second position with, 16 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze medal, while Ondo State came 3rd this year with 12 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze medals.
The remaining top 10 are;
6th- Bayelsa
7th- Benue
8th- Kaduna
9th- Osun and
10th- Niger.
28 Sports were competed for as against 15 competed for at the second edition of the Games.
A total of 2,934 athletes competed in the 135 events that featured at the competition.
34 States and the Federal Capital Territory participated, Zamfara did not register for the Games, while Lagos is the only State that registered, but failed to present athletes.
