Monkeypox reported in Ogun, not true- Health Commissioner

The Ogun State Government says there is no case of monkeypox in the state as reported by the National Centre for Disease Control, Abuja.

The National Centre for Disease Control, had earlier listed the state among the seven States that the disease had spread to.

The State's Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye who made this clarification at a press briefing held at his office, Oke-mosan, Abeokuta, said that there was no case of monkeypox in any part of the State as what was claimed to be the disease was a case of skin tissue/rashes after a diagnosis that was carried out.

He said ‘’when we visited the supposed monkeypox patient at Ijebu-Ode General Hospital to confirm the incident. The sample of his skin tissue was diagnosed as skin rashes.’’

He urged members of the public not to panic but maintain high standard of personal and environmental hygiene at all times as part of precautionary measures to prevent the disease.

The Commissioner said three Isolation centres had been placed on alert to curtail any outbreak of diseases in the state, highlighting the designated centres to include Iberekodo General Hospital, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, and Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

He asked members of the public to be vigilant and report any suspected case of the disease to the nearest public health facility or call the following emergency numbers; 08033591033 and 08094663429, admonishing health workers in the state to be proactive and imbibe universal safety precautions in the management of any suspected or confirmed cases of the disease.
