Two
policemen serving with the Rivers State Police Command were yesterday gunned
down by hoodlums barely four hours after a protest and counter-protest on #End
SARS in the state.
It
was learnt that the two policemen were murdered around Ogbunabali community in
Port Harcourt City Local Council of the state on Monday night while patrolling
the area.
This
happened few hours after the #End SARS protest, which caused tension in Port
Harcourt and its environs, as it was also learnt that the angry hoodlums opened
fire on the police van on security patrol in the area and killed the two
victims.
According
to sources the other police officers, who were in the same van but escaped
during the attack, went in search of the hoodlums, while the remains of the
victims were moved out by their colleagues.
When
contacted, the spokesman of the Command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident,
noting that investigations were on to apprehend the bandits.
He
said: “Investigations are on to unravel the people behind that act. All hands
are on the deck to ensure that they (the killers) are fished out and
prosecuted. At the moment, no arrest has been made but we are working very hard
to track them down.
“There was no break-down of law and order during
the protests in Port Harcourt. Normalcy has returned. The members of the public
should continue to have confidence in the police. The Inspector-General of
Police is trying to reform the SARS. SARS has been doing good jobs in the
state. They go after criminals everyday and that is why we have sanity.”
