The cook
among an alleged kidnap syndicate in Ogun state, Bekewei Abel, says his gang
usually demand up to N10 million from their victims’ relatives.
Bekewei was
one of the 55 suspects paraded by the state Police Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu,
at the Command headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta on Tuesday for various
offences such as Kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, cultism and illegal possession
of fire arm.
The suspect
who was paraded alongside three other members of the suspected syndicate said
his own share of the kidnap ransom is usually N100,000, while his duty is to
cook for the kidnap victims.
He added
that the gang has carried out not less than three kidnap operations.
Also paraded
by the Commissioner, is the leader of another alleged kidnap gang, Oyewunmi
Musa, who said his gang got N8.5 million as ransom from four of their victim’s
relative.
Musa, who
was paraded alongside 10 other members of his alleged syndicate, confessed that
in recent times, his gang had kidnapped four victims and their relatives paid
different sums of money to effect their release.
He said, “In
the first operation, we got N3 million, in the second we got N2.5 million and
for the third and fourth, we got N1.5 million ransom respectively from their
relatives.”
Two members
of Musa’s gang from Ughelli allegedly do link up with the gang each time there
is operation.
Parading the
suspects, the police boss, said a member of the gang, Femi Aresu was arrested
on the 5th of January, 2018 at their hideout in Itele-Ijebu by
operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) and this led to
the arrest of other members of the gang.
Two Fulani
herdsmen who were alleged to have been caught with AK 49 rifle and fake
licensing syndicate who allegedly specializes in printing fake number plates
and documents for snatched vehicles were also paraded.
The Police
Commissioner said other suspected armed robbers and cultists, as well as murder
suspects were also arrested in Abeokuta, Eggua, Ago Iwoye and Aiyetoro, among
others.
Iliyasu said
the paraded suspects were arrested between December 2017 and first week of
January 2018.
He added
that no fewer than 43 arms, which include 10 AK 47, two AK 49 15 Pump Action
guns and 16 locally made pistols, as well as 414 ammunition were recovered from
the arrested suspects.
Also
recovered from the suspects according to him were eight vehicles snatched
during different robbery operations.
