The Federal Road Safety
Corps (FRSC) on Monday debunked the report by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance
and Enforcement Corps that 18 people lost their lives in a fatal accident at
Alapako area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The Public Education
Officer of the state sector command of the FRSC, Florence Okpe in a statement
said only seven people died in the auto crash.
Okpe said three males
adult, three female adult and one child lost their lives in the crash, while 12
others sustained various degrees of injuries.
She added that the bodies
of the deceased were deposited at the morgue of the FOS Hospital, in Ishara,
while the injured victims were taken to Idera Hospital at Sagamu by the men of
the FRSC.
Okpe said the crash was as
a result of suspected tyre burst and speeding, while the state Sector Commander
of FRSC, Clement Oladele has led a team of FRSC operatives to Idera Hospital
for a Hospital follow up visit in accordance with the World Health Organisation
(WHO) thirty-day rule.
According to Okpe the
follow up visit revealed that nine of the victims taken to Idera hospital are
currently responding to treatment and one Titilayo Eboluwa has been discharged.
The Public Education
Officer said that preliminary investigation by FRSC accident investigation team
shows that the burst tyre of the commercial bus involved in the accident had
expired and the bus did not have the speed limiting device at the time of the
crash.
She added that there was
no record of drivers’ license and passengers manifest in the commercial bus.
According to her the
accident involved a Ford Explorer Jeep marked KJA-278-DS and Mazda E2200 bus
marked BDG-873-XU.
Spokesman of TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, had on Sunday confirmed to
Newsworldpremium that the accident involved an Xtera Jeep marked KJA-278-DS, a
Ford and a bus marked GGE-873-XU, with all the 18 passengers in the bus losing
their lives, while the driver of the Jeep and its only occupant survived the
accident with various degrees of injuries.
