Ogun Police recover 3445 arms and ammunition in 21 days

The Ogun State Police Command says it has recovered 3445 arms and ammunition, with 27 suspects arrested within the last 21 days.

The State Police Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu who made this known while parading the suspects and cache of arms and ammunition at Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, said that the operations within the period under review was in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris that arms and ammunition illegally possessed by every individual should be mopped up.
Iliyasu said some law abiding citizens complied with the directive to surrender their arms, while most of the arms and ammunition he paraded were recovered from criminal gangs, ranging from armed robbers, kidnappers, cultists among others.
He said “In line with the IGP directive, a press release was made in which 21 days ultimatum was given to those affected by the directive to surrender the arms in their possession failure of which will make the defaulters to face full wrath of the law.
“Some law abiding citizens have complied with the order, while some of the arms and ammunition paraded here today were either seized or recovered from criminal gangs ranging from armed robbers, kidnappers, cultists, etc.”
He added that the recovered arms and ammunition include 1,179 arms and 2266 ammunition, while further break down shows that these include 24 Ak47 assault rifles, 66 pump action guns, 1,088 single and double barrel guns, as well as 1,025 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and 1,241 rounds of live cartridges.
The 27 paraded suspects allegedly committed offences ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, car snatching, among others.
