2018 ITTF World Team Championships: Nigeria breezes into quarter as Egypt slumps

Nigeria table tennis team had a smooth ride to the quarterfinal of the second division at the 2018 ITTF World Team Championships with a 3-1 win over Spain in the last 16 tie played at the Halmstad Arena in Sweden.

The trio of Aruna Quadri, Segun Toriola and Bode Abiodun humbled the Spaniard trio of Carlos Machado, Alvaro Robles and Jesus Cantero to set up a rematch against Slovakia in the quarterfinal today.

Egypt’s quest to remain in the Championship Division suffered another setback as their men and women teams lost 3-1 to Belarus and Russia respectively in the classification tie.

The fate of the Egyptians will be decided when the final classification matches are concluded today.

Also Congo Brazzaville as the only African team that made it to the knockout stage in the third division failed to advance to the last eight after suffering humiliating 3-0 defeat in the hand of Israel.

Defending champions, China walked into the last four of the championship after their female team edged out Austria with a 3-0 bashing while Japan also bundled out Ukraine while their male compatriots beat Hong Kong to berth in the quarterfinal.

Host, Sweden celebrated their 3-2 win in the men’s event of the Championship Division with the victory over Chinese Taipei.

The quarterfinal matches of the Championship and second divisions will be played on today at the Halmstad Arena while the competition ends on Sunday May 6 with two teams getting promotion to the upper division, while two teams will be relegated to the lower divisions from the three tiers.
