Beating and Corporal punishment kills children moral esteem- Expert

By Omobolaji Adekunle

A child protection expert, Sanni Olakunle says inflicting pains on children through beating and giving them corporal punishment kill their self moral esteem.

Sanni made this known during a programme organized by the Ogun State Chapter of the Children Protection Network, at the Nigeria Union of Journalist Press Center in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

He added that the law does not give room for or allow parents to beat or give children corporal punishment.

He kicked against the use of cane to beat children, as well as giving them corporal punishment, saying it is a mental abuse for children.

He said "Beating children is a taboo in the law and giving them corporal punishment is a mental abuse on children, it is not cane or punishment that makes them to be obedient to our instructions.

"It kills children emotionally, mentally and physically. We destroy their brain each time we carry cane to beat them.”

He added that collective guardians and training is what will shape and mould children’s behaviour.

Sanni said that Children Protection Network is to create awareness in the society and campaign on the social media.
